ANN M. HEINS

Ann M. Heins was born on April 10, 1954, a twin and one of eleven children of Paul and Ruth Heins. She attended the Syracuse City schools and graduated from SUNY Brockport with a degree in Physical Education. Ann became an Adapted Physical Education teacher for the Syracuse School District and Adjunct Professor at Syracuse University.

As a single mom, her life revolved around her three sons, Ryan, Mark and Eric. They ¡°clowned¡± and she was known as ¡°Feathers¡±. She truly enjoyed playing golf with them and, as a family, would take them on yearly trips all over the United States. For many years, all of them volunteered at Camp Good Days.

During her recovery, and always one to be active, Ann was encouraged by her doctor to research and develop an exercise support group for women living with breast cancer. She was the co-founder of ¡°Moving On¡± whose members wear T-shirts with an angel and ¡°Expect a Miracle¡± delicately printed on them. Ann¡¯s other favorite saying was, ¡°I hope you dance.¡±

Ann was a keynote speaker and presented workshops throughout the country. She also received numerous awards for her involvement with breast cancer. Her endurance and optimistic outlook on life are still an inspiration.

Ann loved people ¨C talking, listening, and encouraging them.? Her knowledge of breast cancer, drugs, new treatments, and doctors was extensive. She provided others with someone to talk to. She was always available to share their common concerns and worries.

Ann¡¯s one-to-two year prognosis lasted more than twelve years! During that time, you name it, she probably had it done to her. Yet, no one would ever know unless she was specifically asked. During those twelve years Ann rarely missed a day of work, an exercise class, a volunteer commitment, a trip, a party or a single day of her life.
